Chapter 4 ~ Canadian Country Mama's Tips & Tricks

I shared with you last week advice that my friends gave me when I was first pregnant. This is my list. Some are related to pregnancy, others are things I found helpful as I was getting ready to welcome our little one.

To preface, I have not been paid or asked to promote any of the following products or events. These are my true opinions.

Pregnancy App:
This being our first child, I wanted to learn about our baby as they grew. I wanted an app that would teach me about how the baby was developing at each stage. I tried a few, but I wasn't impressed. Then, I found Sprout. The Sprout Pregnancy+ App had everything I was looking for and more.

Here's some of my favourite features:

  • My Baby Weekly Updates
    • Approximate weight and length. Compares your baby's size to fruits and vegetables.
    • Highlights different developments in your baby (fingernails, hair, eyes perceiving light, etc.)
  • Weekly "The Doc Says"
    • This highlights different keys at the stage you are at. Example: explaining why you feel tired and how to help combat it.
    • It also provides a timeline though it is not accurate for Canada.
  • My Journal
    • Ability to journal during your whole pregnancy. It also gives ideas of things to journal about if you're lost for ideas.
    • Keeps journal entries organized by date, also marks which week in your pregnancy.
    • Journal allows you to add a picture to each entry.
    • Journal can be exported as a pdf. 1 entry/page.
    • Cons: You are limited by characters. It does not allow for long entries. Though it is longer than a tweet.
  • Organizer
    • M.D. Visit Planner
      • Mark your next appointment.
      • Keep track of useful details (due date, weight update.)
      • Write down questions and their answers.
    • To Do
      • Create and manage tasks (I didn't use this one.)
    • Newborn Essentials
      • Their list of what they felt was needed for baby and how many.
      • I used this as a reference.
    • Hospital Bag
      • Same as above. I used it as a reference only. Hospital Bag post will be coming soon!
  • Tools
    • Weight Tracker
      • Easily record your weight gain.
      • Helpful if use you want to compare weight gain against your next pregnancy.
      • Can be changed to lbs instead of kgs.
    • Kick Counter
      • Track frequency of your baby's movement. I didn't use this feature.
    • Contraction Counter
      • This was very helpful. We used it right from the beginning of the first contraction to when we met up with our midwife at the hospital.
      • It helped my husband easily keep track of contractions as he needed to be able to call the midwife and let her know where we were at. In that moment you don't want a stopwatch (even on your phone) and a pen and paper. This app does it all for you! All you do is press start and stop.

This app can be purchased on it's own, or you can buy the bundle (Tracker, Pregnancy, Baby.) Personally, for all these apps do, I thought the bundle was well worth it. I highly recommend these apps!

Baby Show
I forgot about the timing of the Toronto Baby Show last year. My husband was unavailable, so my Dad came with me. It was a nice time to spend with my Father and as a grandparent, his ticket was cheaper than mine!

The Baby Show was great for 3 reasons:

  1. Draws
    • Make labels with your name, address, e-mail, and phone #. Because I forgot about these, I didn't have time to make labels, but they would have been very helpful!
    • Draws for everything baby. And why not? If you have a chance of saving yourself some money and getting something free, do it!
  2. Information
    • Thankfully, we were given a car seat and stroller by an amazing friend who no longer needed it. But if you need a car seat or a stroller then likely you want to look at them, ask questions, and compare. At the Baby Show, you can do all of this. There were so many car seat and stroller options! If you need or want more information on baby items, this is a good place to be.
    • Plus, they had a car seat installation clinic. Because of insurance reasons, these are getting harder to find. But if you have your car seat, you can get it checked out at the Baby Show!
  3. Shopping
    • While I was there, I picked up a few toys.
    • I also got a subscription to Today's Parent Magazine. I love this magazine! It hits being a parent at all ages and stages. Plus, it's Canadian! As a show bonus, I got a baby onesie and a scarf for myself.

Here's a list of Baby Shows in Ontario this Year:

April 1-2, 2017The Baby Show (Toronto)

April 28-30, 2017 ~ BabyTime Show (Toronto)

May 27-28, 2017 ~ Bump Baby Toddler Expo (Hamilton)

September 30 & October 1, 2017 ~ The Baby Show (Toronto)

October 1-2, 2017 ~ Baby Expo (London)

November 4-5, 2017The Baby Show (Ottawa)

Prenatal Yoga
Before pregnancy, my activities included Zumba, biking, hiking, and kayaking. Being pregnant, I wasn't able to ride my bike or go kayaking. So, I needed a different activity. Plus, I wanted something where I could connect with other women that were in the same boat. So, I found a local prenatal yoga class. Best decision!

Yoga helped me relax, it helped me stay active and limber, and it gave me an hour of quiet away from work and home. It also equipped me with some positions to use when I felt uncomfortable or had certain pains flare up; easy positions that I could do at home or work.

Search Google or ask your Midwife or Doctor if they know of a local class. And they may even have a Mom & Baby Yoga that you can do after your baby is born.

Nursery Set-Up Recommendations:
These are some tips that I have found invaluable in our Nursery set-up.
  • Keep Laundry Bin by Change Table
    • With the exception of a couple big spit-ups, we change our daughter at the change table. Keeping the bin close by has been very helpful.
  • Nursing Basket
    • I will expand on this in a later post, but this basket is crucial. I had two main spots that I nursed: the nursery and the living room. So, I made sure there was a basket at each. You get hungry and thirsty when you breastfeed. The basket helped keep everything I needed close at hand!
  • Clothes
    • I pre-washed and sorted all of the clothes that we received in advance. I kept the first two sizes close at hand, not knowing what our starting size would be. The rest were stored in bins. Each bin contained a new size and stacked neatly in the closet.
Facebook Buy&Sell
There are community Buy&Sell pages all over Facebook. Think of it as kijiji in your own area. People sell all sorts of stuff and it can be a great place to look for baby stuff at a much cheaper price. I found a Baby Bouncer Seat for $30 less than what it would be new and it was like new. Threw it all in the wash and no one would have known. I also have a friend who found an excellent deal on a great high chair. Others have found bundles of clothes at good prices.

Search Facebook to find one (or more) in your area and see what kind of deals you can find!

Diaper Bag
Like my quilt and wall hanging I mentioned in Chapter 1, my Mom (https://upstairshobbyroom.blogspot.ca) made me an amazing diaper bag. It is the perfect size. However, there are some times we need a bigger bag (going to the hospital, Christmas....)

The New Day Tote from Thirty-One is a perfect diaper bag! It has plenty of pockets (two outside and two inside for bottles, a zipper pocket inside and outside, and two more pockets inside the bag), sturdy straps, and the whole bag is wipeable and washable. Need a Thirty-One consultant? Send me a message and I'll connect you with one.
Food
I love to cook but I knew that I would be very busy the first few weeks after the baby was born. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to cook. And, my husband doesn't cook. He will turn on the stove or microwave, but no cooking. So, in my 7th month, I started to prepare.

Whenever I made a meal that could freeze, I made two. We ate one, and I froze the other. The week before I was due, I went to Costco and I stocked up! I got individual meals, high protein snacks, and granola bars. I wanted meals for myself and my husband, I also wanted quick things that I could grab when I was hungry but didn't have time (or energy) to make anything.

I found individual chicken pot pies, Babybel cheese, fig bars, and Summer Fresh Salads all great things to grab in a pinch.

Hope you find these notes useful!

Until next time,

Chapter 3 ~ Friendly Advice

Before I found out I was pregnant, I had multiple friends who had babies. I saw their things and had shopped for them, so, I was familiar with some of current trends and gadgets. Until you consider these things for your own child...you have no idea how crazy this world is! You could spend a fortune on baby stuff! And some of it is pretty neat.

Not wanting to waste time or money, I asked my friends what they recommended. What did they find worked, what they didn't. What would they not want to raise a baby without (any guesses?) After I had their lists, I did my own research. They had given me the ideas, but I had to find what brand and models would work for us.

This blog is dedicated to my amazing friends who shared their thoughts and their finds with me. Below are pieces of advice that I have found to be invaluable over these last few months, including one thing I had never heard of.

Take these ideas and then do your own research! Find what works for you and to find the best price. Save your pennies where you can. I say pennies, because online they still exist! Lol.

  • Prenatal Vitamins
    • If you have a Costco membership, buy your prenatal vitamins there! Materna vitamins are way cheaper there. And, they have a very large Kirkland bottle option even cheaper.
  • Invest in a good stroller.
    • I live in the country, so that goes without saying. But great strollers can be expensive. If you have your eye on one specific, check out Kijiji. You never know what you may find!
    • We decided on an UppaBaby Vista stroller. Large, thick wheels were what I noticed first. It comes with a bassinet (which we have used for three months now), and a toddler seat. Bonus, with this stroller, you can buy an additional toddler seat to have two toddlers riding along. You can also get a board for a toddler to stand on allowing for three passengers. In newer models, you can get two bassinets at a time on one stroller! Great for twins :). And a variety of colours are also available.

  • Get a Diaper Genie
    • This was always part of my plan but it was the one thing a friend said they would not do without. When my husband and I went to pick it up, he wondered if we really needed it. After all, they're not cheap. But now, he's glad we did! No diaper smell in our nursery :).
    • The "Elite" model has a flat back, so it fits up against the wall perfectly.
  • Invest in a Baby Tub
    • Choose whichever works best for you and your space, but get one. For the amount of times you will bathe your baby, it's worth it.
    • We choose the Fisher Price Calming Waters Vibration Baby Tub. At the time, Amazon.ca had the best price.
      • This tub comes with an infant sling and a divider to help prevent toddlers from slipping. It has a drain in the bottom and it vibrates to soothe your baby.
  • The Diaper Debate
    • I have friends that do cloth - all the power to them!
    • But we choose to go with disposable. So, the question was which ones?
      • I had heard that the "no name" brands tabs aren't as good, so they were out. Other "better" brands were to costly to consider.
      • The battle became Pampers vs Huggies.
        • The friends I asked unanimously voted HUGGIES. They said they were more absorbent and had better leak control. So, we went with Huggies.
        • I have to say, I agree! Plus, Pampers seems to have a big size discrepancy. As you can see in the pic below the first diaper is a Pampers size newborn. to it's right, is the next stage, size 1. Then you'll see beside it is a Huggies size newborn and to it's right, is the next stage, size 1.

        • When my daughter was born, she fit the Pampers newborns for a few weeks, At three months, she still couldn't fit the Pampers size 1s properly. The Huggies have fit perfectly all the way through.
        • When I signed up, Huggies also sent me great me a free bag of diapers and great coupons! Sign yourself up here: No Baby Unhugged
        • I am currently waiting for my trials from The Honest Company. Just pay the shipping. Pretty good deal, even if it is American dollars. I also bundled some other products to try that I couldn't find here in Canada. I will review these Honest products in another post.
          • Diaper Bundle: 7 diapers & 10 wipes
          • Essentials: Trial sizes of 5 personal care and home cleaning essentials: Shampoo+Body Wash, Face+Body Lotion, Multi-Surface Cleaner, Healing Balm, Hand Soap.
  • Find a good, supportive baby carrier.
    • We wanted something that both myself and my husband would feel comfortable using. That meant looking for a carrier, not a sling. Also, to make it worth the money, we wanted something with versatility for carrying with good support.
    • My Choice? The Onya Outback I love this carrier!
      • You can have your baby on your front (facing you or facing out), you can have them on your side or on your back. You can even breastfeed in it, though I haven't tried that yet.
      • It can also be done up two ways: with straight straps or crossed. The straps are thick with great padding.
      • It also comes with a sun canopy and pockets.
      • And when your baby is big enough to sit on their own, it converts into a seat that can be strapped to a chair. Yes, it is amazing!
      • Add-ons: an infant insert available as well as teething straps.
  • Bottle Recommendation
    • I had planned to breastfeed exclusively but even with a strict pumping regime, I don't produce enough. So, I had to find a bottle that would be a good fit to work with breastfeeding.
    • My friends recommended NUK. We got the "Perfect Fit" slow release nipples and they work great! I have heard of babies that have troubles taking a bottle or are picky about the nipple. Our daughter gave us no problems.
    • NUK's bottles are shaped specifically replicate the nipple. It also introduces a anti-colic system. No complaints here!
    • They are available in 5oz and 10oz NUK Canada Bottles & Accessories
    • Con: They no longer make them with sealing disks. Their indented caps are meant to seal off the nipple. However, I find when I shake to mix formula, they leak a bit. Also, the lids can come off easily in your bag. Working on finding more, will update if I find any! For now, I took one as a stencil and cut out some flexible cutting boards to make some.

  • A Gift: NeilMed Naspira Aspirator
    • This was a gift from a friend that is a nurse. And I am thankful for it! I had never heard of one like this but there are so many pros to this product!
    • You can use it as a bulb, pumping it with your hand. Or, you can use the tube and suck out the congestion. Our daughter doesn't like it but it is much more effective than other bulbs.
    • The main thing I love about this aspirator is that it's clear. This helps you see the progress you've made. It also ensures that when you clean it, you see everything. And it can be disassembled for easy cleaning. Included: a mesh carrying case and extra filters.
    • Check it out at Amazon: NeilMed Naspira Aspirator

I hope you find these tools to be as helpful as I have! Is there something that you found you couldn't live without while raising your newborn? Please share in the comments below!

Chapter 2 ~ Call the Midwife!

If you're on Netflix, or like British TV, then you've probably heard of or seen BBC's "Call the Midwife." I really enjoyed it. I didn't really know a whole lot about midwifery before the show. And honestly, after seeing three seasons, I didn't know any more. Not really. I mean the show is based in a different time, a different country...and as good as it is, it's still just a TV show.

I didn't know anything about Midwives here in Canada in the 21st Century, until a friend of mine got a Midwife for her pregnancy. She had a great experience, and highly recommended it. So, when I found out I was pregnant, I decided to look into it.

This is what I learned:

  • Getting a midwife is FREE!
    • Yes, you read that right! My Doctor didn't really say anything about it. They mentioned that it was a possibility, but it was kind of just a passing comment. If it weren't for my friend letting me know this little fact, I would have thought it was a special service like a 3D ultrasound.
    • You have a choice. After seeing your Family Doctor for you first 20 weeks, you can switch to an OBGYN or a Midwife.
  • Midwives work within a certain geological area.
    • So, make sure you find one that serves your home address.
  • You need to book early!
    • They only take on so many clients based on your due date. If getting a midwife is something you're considering or interested in, call them right away.
  • It's personal.
    • My midwife knew me by name. Doctors and OBGYNS, as good as they can be, have many clients. Midwives, only taking on so many patients at a time, can be more personal. I think our Midwife was extra special. She was so good and remembered many details about me and my pregnancy without looking at a file.
    • Midwives are also always on call. As a result, I had my main midwife and a back-up. If I called, or had an emergency, and my main Midwife wasn't available, I got the back-up. But it was someone I had met, not just someone on call.
  • With a Midwife, you have options.
    • You can give birth in a hospital, at home, in water...some even have small personal clinics near the hospital.
    • They also explain things in detail. Both sides. They don't make assumptions. They'll share pros and cons, studies, and then let you make the decision. I didn't feel any pressure or judgment.
  • They have resources.
    • At my Doctor's office, I got some print outs in a folder. The Midwives gave me an organized binder full of useful information sorted by tabs.
    • I am sure that it is different at every office. At the one in my area, they had a lending library with books that you could borrow on a variety of topics from pregnancy to raising children. They also had nursing pillows and slings that you could try out to see what would work best for you.
  • They are available 24/7
    • If I had a question, they would get back to me.
    • I got a pager number. If I had an emergency, I could call them and get an answer right away. If it was serious, they would deal with it right then. If needed, they would meet me at the local Hospital.
  • You get a personal coach/supporter
    • My Midwife was there with me through the whole process. In fact, at delivery and afterwards, I had 2 midwives. They encouraged me and my husband (who felt helpless.) They talked me through everything before and as it happened.
    • I didn't need a Doctor, but if something goes wrong, a Doctor is called in. In the midst of your pain, you have a medical professional who knows you and can help you stick to your birthing plan (as much as that is possible.)
  • They will help you with breastfeeding.
    • This will be a whole other post. But most Moms, new and "old" (like someone who has had had six kids...read an example in Today's Parent Magazine), need help. They help ensure your baby is latching properly and getting what they need.
    • They follow up at home after!
      • That's right! So good, it's worth putting in bold. With my other friends, after just having a baby, they had to drag themselves and their two day old baby to the Doctor's office! All those germs and possibly bad weather. With a Midwife, they came right to me. Three home visits within 2 weeks.
      • When our daughter's weight really dropped, she made extra trips to watch her weight and make sure our progress was on track.
    • You stay with them for six weeks after the birth of your baby.
      • After the six weeks is up, you get transferred back to your Family Doctor.
You can probably guess from the list above that my experience was a good one. Both my husband and I really liked our Midwife and was impressed with the whole set-up. We will go this route again.

    Until next time,

Chapter 1 ~ Nesting: The Nursery

For me, nesting began right away. In spite of my constant fatigue, I started reading, I began clearing out what would become the baby's room, and I began researching.

My goal was to make the best nursery I could. It had become a storage room, so I had a lot of cleaning up to do. As I sorted and organized, I considered several things:

    1. Having a smaller space, we wanted things that served multiple purposes.
    2. We wanted to make it a space that could be easily converted for our future children.
    3. I very carefully weighed out need versus want.
    4. And we wanted it to be fun!

So, I set out to try and accomplish this.

    Functional
    • Crib (kind of functional and convertible)
    • Storage
      • Our closets are tall, so we added an extra shelf above the existing one to give additional storage.
      • Baby clothes are small (and short!), so we also added an additional cupboard below to store extra and little things.
      • We thought about buying a long, thin storage bin that could fit under the crib. This is still on the list, so far we haven't needed it.
      • We did buy multiple bins to sort and store baby clothes. We keep current clothes in the dresser and additional stages in bins in the closet.
    • Change Table
      • As I mentioned, we have a smaller space, so having a stand alone change table in the nursery was not an option. We updated an old dresser from my Great Grandmother and added a changing pad to the top. Honestly, what would you use a change table for after anyways?
      • Kushies Change Pad
    • Bookshelf
      • A small, short bookshelf also became a home for the night light and baby monitor.
    • Toys
      • We wanted things that could be easily stored. (example: a play mat that would fold up)
      • We wanted toys that would last through multiple stages. Something that plays music now could be used to teach colours and shapes later.
I was also constantly thinking about what the best layout would be. What do I need by my change table? Where should the rocking chair be? Pinterest became my inspiration! It got me to think, "What will I need and when?" I got a lot of great ideas but ultimately, I simply worked with my own space. So far, everything has been working great! I haven't had to change around anything. Although, we have yet to find space for the giant stuffed dog we received from my brother. And we had to do a bit of rearranging after Christmas to accommodate all the new gifts.

    Convertible

We were one of those couples wanted to know the gender of our child. If you don't do that, that's fine! To each their own. I'm a planner, so I wanted to know. Plus, as I said, I wanted to make this nursery amazing. To do that, no yellow or green for me.

We discovered we were going to have a girl (my husband made them double check), so I wanted the nursery to be fun and girly. But I also wanted it to be able to easily covert it later if we have a boy.
    • Walls
      • I choose a light teal colour. My plan was to add pink accents if it was a girl and navy accents if we were having a boy.
      • The last thing we did in the nursery was add our little accents. Pictures, little shelves, and a wall hanging made by my Mom.
    • Accents - Little things to add a pop of colour and girliness
      • Light Cover
      • Sheets
        • I bought plain grey sheets for the bassinet, change pad, and playpen. But I bought two crib sheets with pink in them for fun. It was practical to buy sheets we could use for all future children but had fun by adding a little pink!
        • Kushies Sheets (Made in Canada!)
      • Wall Stickers & Mobile
        •  These were a great deal! At my local Lens Mill Store, I found a pack of wall stickers (elephants - exactly what I wanted!) for $4.99! Beside them I found a mobile in our colour scheme for $9.99. Perfect! Plus, with the mobile, I can easily buy or make different ornaments for a boy to change it up.
      • Closet Dividers
        • Another Etsy purchase. A touch of pink makes them girly but I can easily find clothes in the right sizes. This was not a need, but when I saw them in our room colours, I decided to splurge :).
        • Closet Dividers
          • I purchased all of them at once to save on shipping. Newborn-7!
      • Curtains
        • Our window curtains are grey blackout curtains. They will remain boy or girl. Our closet had no door. As I mentioned, our space is small, so we didn't want a door in the way. I also wanted to see the fun treasures inside. So, we hung a white tension rod across the top with patterned pink curtains.
      • Pillows
        • This wasn't a need, just something I had. We had a bassinet, so we didn't use the crib at first. The pink pillows sat in there along with a stuffed elephant (made by my Mom) to make it fun until it was occupied.
    Need vs. Want

This is more related to "baby stuff" in general. There are so many gadgets and devices out there. So many things that can make being a Mom easier, at least that's the claim! You could spend a fortune that you (at least we) don't have on baby stuff. But you don't really need it. Diapers, that's a need. A swiveling, swinging, singing (lots of "s" words there - not intentional!) bassinet is not a need. No judgment if you have one.

So, if you have a small space like we do, weigh each thought carefully as you make your registry, or fill your cart. Remember, everything needs to fit...and your baby will grow...quickly!

    Fun

I think the pictures will speak for themselves on this one ;).

My Mom is a quilter. The wall hanging, elephant quilt and elephant in the crib, along with various other items were all made by her. It's all amazing! She's been happily making a lot of things for her first grandchild! If you're reading this and into sewing and/or quilting, check her out: upstairshobbyroom.blogspot.ca)
