Chapter 10 ~ Pregnancy Photoshoot

Photography. With technology, most everyone has a camera these days. And some phones take excellent pictures! But that doesn't mean that all pictures are great. Just because you have a camera doesn't mean you are a photographer. Myself included!

But there is something special, whimsical maybe about a pregnant mother thinking about the wonderful gift that is about to come into her life. So, I started researching baby and pregnancy photographers. I wanted to see what was available in my area.

I found a few, but the prices (insert "gulp" here!) I am all for paying people what they earn (ie taking amazing pictures) but the price for things sometimes is just way beyond what it needs to be. A photo shoot could cost us more than a crib! Babies cost enough, we couldn't justify paying those prices when we had other things we needed for the baby and other expenses coming for baby.

I didn't do weekly pictures of my bump. In fact I didn't really get many pictures at all. My husband hates taking pictures and he hates being in pictures, so that didn't help my cause. I wanted to make sure that I got some pictures of that precious time in my life, no matter how big I was!

So, I contacted my Mom and asked if she wouldn't mind snapping a couple pictures when that time came. She's not a professional, but I knew that they would be perfect for what we wanted.

I didn't wear a beautiful, long flowing dress. I didn't go bare skin. It was just me being me, fat face and all.

It was not on the top of my list, so when "that time came," I kind of forgot! Ooops! How could that have happened?!? (Anyone relate? ;) )

Seven days overdue, and two days before our bundle was born, we finally got it done! My Mom dusted off her camera and I went out into the beautiful fall leaves. And I am glad we did!

I look at my face and I judge myself. But then I look at my bump and remember all the wonders of carrying that little person inside me for nine whole months! I remember telling my husband we were going to have a baby and the joy of sharing it with our family and friends. I recall the tired days on the couch and feeling her first movements. I remember the pouring out of blessing on our family from so many as we began our journey. I remember all the amazing moments since she's been born. What a wonder pregnancy is!

And I know that though it is not all captured in the photos but it's in my eyes. These pictures will help me remember.

Whether you wear the flowing dress, flaunt your bare skinned bump, or just be you; whether you hire a photographer, take selfies, or talk your Mom into it doesn't matter. Do what makes you feel comfortable, what will help you capture the moment. But I do recommend that capture those moments before their gone. It passes all too quickly.

No matter what you choose, be prepared! Here are some tips to help.

TIPS:

  • Casual Photo Shoots
    • If you don't know a photographer, ask your friends, they might! See if they know someone who would be willing to take a few casual pictures of you and your bump. Discuss payment or thank them with a gift!
  • Have Photo Ideas With You.
    • Scour ideas on Pinterest! Click here to get some. Ask your photographer if you can send some to them, or bring them with you and show them what you want. Or use them yourself for a reference.
    • If your idea needs a prop, bring it with you. Most times these items are personal, so you'll have them. If it's generic, ask your photographer. They may have something.
  • Bring a Variety of Outfits!
    • Some photographers provide those, so that's ok. But you know us women, we like options and we don't always like something when we put it on later! Being pregnant, I found that happened even more often. So, be prepared for it. Last thing you want is to feel even more uncomfortable because you don't like your outfit!
  • Bring Water & Lip Gloss!
    • Especially if you're pictures are being done in a studio, under lights, you'll be glad you did!
  • Make an Alternative Weather Plan.
    • It may rain, or something else. So if you want to go outdoors, have a back-up plan.
  • Don't Stress.
    • Seriously, don't. Yes, you want pictures, but they don't have to be a stress point! Just have fun and be you. Let whoever has the camera do the rest. Whatever your pictures, I'm sure they'll be beautiful.
  • Deals!
    • If you plan on hiring a photographer, look for someone who offers a deal by doing your pregnancy and newborn photos.

Hope this helps! Remember, just relax (as much as you can), and say "cheese!"

Until next time,

Chapter 9 ~ Having a Babymoon!

In my first trimester, I was lucky to get out of bed and go to work. I was exhausted all the time! The couch became my favourite place, my happy place.

Coming into my second trimester, it really changed. Don't get me wrong, I still liked a good nap! But I had a lot more energy. So, my husband and I decided to plan a trip!

The unfortunate part is we don't really watch or follow the news. So, we made plans for a resort in the south. We booked a last minute deal. We were a few weeks away when we learned of the zika virus.

Yup, I know, it was all over. But we weren't listening or paying attention. Needless to say, we did not travel south. It wasn't worth the risk.

Instead, we decided to support Canada and go to our favourite place, Niagara Falls.

It was beautiful! June was warm and sunny, we had the perfect weather! We walked along the Falls, battled in the Arcade, enjoyed Starbucks (multiple times!), crossed the border to buy maternity clothes at Target (that's right - I miss it!), dined out at great restaurants, saw a show, and I went to the Spa. It was bliss!

Honestly, a "Babymoon" is something I highly encourage. Take some time away for the two of you to rest, have an adventure, and enjoy each other's company. So much changes so soon and the last months can be busy with preparations. Make sure you take some time for you and your spouse! Connect, talk, and try and forget about the bump in front of you. Save the baby talk. Just focus on the two of you.

Where you go is up to you. You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great time! Go camping or to a cabin in the woods if that's your thing. But take a few days at least and get away.

If you want to go to Niagara Falls, here are a few suggestions:

Clifton Hill
Feel like a kid again and check out all the fun that Clifton Hill has to offer! Battle it out in the arcade, go bowling, play mini-golf (indoor glow-in-the-dark or outdoor with dinosaurs), check out Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not, etc. There's so much to do and see!

21 Club Steak & Seafood
The dining room is beautiful, the food is amazing, and when I asked, they brought me a large glass of cold milk! I didn't really have cravings when I was pregnant, but I loved a cold glass of milk. It's very refreshing!

The Spa
Whether you stay in their hotel or not, by booking at the spa that day you get access to the pool and gym. In the Spa there is a steam room, sauna, and hot tub (used them before, not for this trip.)

There is a private lounge with fresh fruit, yogurt, and other snacks. They also have hot beverages and fruit and veggie infused water options. The change room facilities are first rate. The staff is excellent, the service is amazing.

And yes, they have registered prenatal massages available. Uh huh.

I had one bad treatment when I was there. When I contacted them, they made it right and said it would be available whenever I was able to get back. I was very pleased with their promptness in replying and care for me as a customer.

Skylon Tower
We did this on another trip but if you haven't gone up the tower at Niagara Falls, add this to your list! So worth it! My lobster tail was amazing and seeing Niagara at night was beautiful. Plus, we saw fireworks! If you want this, check in advance as fireworks are often but not every night and only at a certain time.

Greg Frewin Magic Show
Lastly, if you like magic, go to this show! It was a lot of fun. We paid extra and did the buffet before. It made it easier than trying to dine somewhere else, the cost was comparable to what we'd pay at a restaurant, and the food was surprisingly good. We had a great night!

That's it, hope you have a fantastic time away! Put those feet up and get a pedicure, I highly recommend it!

Until next time,

Chapter 8 ~ Free Programs & Samples in Canada

Maybe you started looking already. Maybe you've seen the fancy diaper bags you can get only to find out it's for U.S. Residents only :(.

We may not get the fancy stuff they have available south of us, but we still have a good number of options available to us so do not despair!

I have done many hours of research and compiled a list below. It should covers most, if not all of the main ones. Though there still may be some I've missed. If you know of more (and they are still available), please share in the comments!

Here we go!

Unfortunately just as I'm writing this I realize that I haven't received anything! As having a baby isn't busy or anything ;) I had totally forgotten! I have now contacted the company, we'll see what happens from here.

Heinz Baby Club
Just signed up for this one, so we'll see what comes. I'll update with any new information.

The Unknowns

Parent Life Network (Canada's Lukiest Baby)
I'm waiting on this one. On the website, the last contest was 2015 though Google shows there was a winner in 2016. I'm not sure if it's going on currently or if it's a scam. Doing more research.

Baby Box Canada
According to Huffington Post, this organization is legit. They are simply overloaded; they never expected the response the received. Promising free stuff - what did they expect!?

I should point out that I have contacted them twice asking about the boxes. Both times it took over a month for them to respond! Disappointing.

According to their website, their claim is now that boxes will be sent out April 2017. And if you signed up before and your baby has been born since, you are to receive an age appropriate box.

Go to store with baby and fill out form at Pharmacy.

Discontinued Programs

Shoppers Drug Mart
Unfortunately according to their Facebook, the Shoppers Drug Mart VIB (Very Important Baby) Program has been discontinued. So if you never received anything, or someone told you to look for it, you won't find it. However, they still have helpful articles and resources on their "Welcome to Mom-Hood" Page. See Some examples below.

Lansinoh
From what I can tell, Lansinoh no longer sends free samples to Canada.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scams
NewBornBabyItems.com
From my research, this is a scam. The idea is that you give them your information and it signs you up for all the available free programs and samples. When something seems to good to be true, usually it is. Sorry!
Chapter 7 ~ Baby Registry
Early on in my pregnancy, I started doing research. I know that the baby market is CRAZY! There are so many different products and options!!! I wanted to not just get things because they look cool but because we needed them.
First, I went to my friends, I wanted to know what they felt was a need and what products they recommended. I took their suggestions and what I had seen and experienced (while babysitting and at work) and went to the internet to find out more!
Some things I have already broken down in previous posts (see Chapter 3 & 4.) I will break down more in the future as well. This post is just a list to help you along the way.
CREATING A REGISTRY
Though not everyone in my life is into technology, I knew the easiest way to share our registry was to have it available online and to have it all in one place.
This led me to "MyRegistry.com"
PROS:
  • It's like Pinterest! You download a bookmark and you can add anything you want, from any website to one registry.
  • Allows you specify number of items desired, colour, etc. It also allows you to post the cost of the item.
  • When someone opens an item, it directs them to the site you added the item from. MyRegistry gives them your address, if they want to ship it directly to you. It also has multiple reminders for the the viewer to come back to the MyRegistry website to mark the item as purchased.
CONS:
  • If you create separate registries (through amazon.ca, Babies 'R Us Canada, etc) you can't link them. This has not been made possible in Canada yet.
  • When you check or update your registry, purchased items are revealed. There's no way to keep them hidden. If you don't want to know what you're getting, stop looking a few weeks before your Shower, etc. You'll only see who the gift is from if you open the item from your registry.
  • You'll get e-mails for contests that Canadians can't enter. They are apparently working on a filter for this. I suggest unsubscribing until this is resolved.
TIPS:
  • Some items that you register for can disappear quickly and not come back. Be aware and check your items and links often (this will no appear on MyRegistry.)
  • Have back-ups. Our crib disappeared and was no longer available in Canada except for three times what I had found it for. I hadn't kept my list of other options, so I had to research all over again. When doing research, keep track of your top three for major items.
  • Stores like Costco.ca, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Babies 'R Us have the majority of the products only available online, not in-store. Be aware of this and let people know in advance.
  • Ask for gift receipts! I had a large group shower at my work. Many people there didn't look at my registry. As a result, I had duplicate gifts. So, make sure people get gift receipts! You don't want to make those calls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am a big believer in saving money where we can. I didn't want to get items that aren't needed or useful, and I wanted to try to get the most of of our space and money. I expanded on this in my first post, check out Chapter 1 ~ Nesting: The Nursery, to see some examples of how we accomplished this.

Without further ado....

MY REGISTRY LIST:

Pre-Nursery:
  • Bassinet
  • Sheets (2-3)
  • Swaddle Blankets and/or Wraps
The Nursery:
  • Crib
  • Mattress (watch sizes!)
  • Sheets (3)
  • Mobile
  • Dresser and/or Change Table
    • I suggest a dresser, more versatile and gives storage
  • Change Pad
  • Waterproof Pad
  • Sheets (2-3)
  • Diaper Genie
  • Bag Refills
  • Odor Puck Refills
  • Laundry Bin
  • Rocking Chair
  • Humidifier
  • Night Light
  • Baby Monitor
  • Size Dividers (for closet)
  • Toy Bin
*I suggest that you don't stock up on diapers, wipes, diapering items, or bath items as you don't know what your baby's skin will be like.* But if you want a specific product, let it be known on your registry. Personally, I like Live Clean (proudly made in Canada!) and I will expand more in another post.

The Bathroom:
  • Baby Bath Tub (with different stages)
  • Bath Thermometer (if you feel it's needed)
  • Wash Cloths
  • Baby Hooded Towel
  • Nasal Aspirator
  • Thermometer (make sure it's good for infant)
**I suggest that you don't register for clothes, books, or toys as you will get plenty. But if there is something you want specifically, add it to your registry.**

House:
  • Swing or Vibration Seat (you really don't know what your baby will like but so helpful!)
  • Play Mat (for multiple stages)
  • Toy Bin(s)
  • Play Yard
  • Sheets (1-2)
  • Baby Carrier
    • Make sure it's versatile if you both plan on wearing it. Most men don't want to wear a sling. Be aware of colour (attracting sun, and mess.)
Feeding:
  • Breastfeeding
    • Pillow (optional)
      • I found a regular pillow worked just fine!
    • Breast Pump
    • Storage Bottles/Bags
    • Storage Container (optional)
  • Formula
    • Again, be careful! Sign-Up for samples and see what your baby likes first. They could take it fine but don't digest it well. Formula isn't cheap so see what works before you stock up! Then, get coupons and look for sales!!!
  • Both
    • Bottle Drying Rack
      • Not a need but handy. All the little pieces can fill your dish rack. Having designed for this, is very helpful as my dishwasher did not wash bottles well.
Car & Travel:
  • Car Seat
  • Additional Car Seat Base (optional)
    • Allows you use seat in multiple cars without removing base.
  • Stroller
  • Car Seat Cover (optional)
    • I say optional, but it's really handy! Blocks out distractions and light. Helps protect from the cold in the winter....
  • Reflective Shades (optional)
  • Rear View Baby Mirror (optional)
  • Car Seat Protector (optional)
Diaper Bag:

3 Months+:
  • Booster Seat or High Chair
    • We choose a multiple stage booster seat. Needed for travel, suits all stages, and easier to store.
  • Making Baby Food (if you choose to do so)
    • Food Processor/ Steamer
    • Ice Trays or Containers (to freeze food)
  • Baby Dishes (Plates, Bowls, Spoons, etc.)
    • Don't register for bottles, babies can be picky about nipples. No sense getting a bunch of bottles that you can't use!
    • There are pieces available to help you know when food is the right temperature.
    • Keep in mind items that will work for travel as well.
    • Snack Catchers
    • Water Bottle
      • Look for one that can convert through different stages (bottle, sip top, regular.) Klean Kanteen has a great one.
  • Exersaucer or Activity Gym (optional)
    • Like a swing or a bouncy seat, it is not necessary but helpful!
    • It can help give you a needed break to get a couple chores done or just finish a hot cup of coffee or tea! ;)

Please comment below if you want specifics on an item we choose, have questions, or think I missed something! We help each other!

Chapter 6 ~ My Experience with Maternity Clothes

Why is it so hard to find good quality stuff these days? More specifically, why is it so hard to find clothes that are made well, especially for pregnant women?

I go to stores like Sail and they carry quality clothing brands that last. Yes, you pay higher prices for them, but if I have to pay to replace cheaper items, in the long run, I pay more. To me, it makes more sense to pay $150 for good winter boots that will last me 8 years (and counting - Thank you Merrell!) than to pay $50 on boots that may last a season or two.

I am less willing to pay top dollar for something that I will only be wearing 9 months or so. Maternity stores charge just as much or more than regular stores at the mall. Not having options, we're forced to pay. And their quality is disappointing.

And what makes it even harder? Poor selection, tight fitting or extremely loose fitting styles (making it hard to feel good about yourself), and return/shipping policies that are lacking.

Unfortunately, with this post, I don't have solutions. Although at the end I have a few suggestions.

But I am hoping that as we stand up, as we ask for more, we will make a difference. After all, if you've seen Pocahontas, you know the difference a ripple can make! Let's get on social media. Let's ask for more clothes made in Canada. Let's ask for quality. Let's ask for companies to stand behind their products!

Do you remember when Zellers had their jean program? You could bring in jeans, no matter how worn, and get a replacement! That was believing in your product, supporting your customers. If we ask for that, if we stand for that together, the ripples will grow!

Let's get #bringqualityback trending. Let's make ripples. Let's ask for more!

This is my story.

Being from a small, rural community in Ontario, I am not close to many maternity stores. Ones that were closer are Thyme Maternity and Motherhood Maternity. These are probably the most popular. H&M has a small corner that is so poorly stocked, it shouldn't make the list. And The Gap was worse. Otherwise, my options were to go online.

These were my problems:

  1. I have curves. I am not ashamed of them but I don't want everyone to see them either. So, I don't wear skin tight clothing. It was hard to find styles that made me feel comfortable. Many tops were low-cut and tight fitting. This is not my style.
  2. I believe that stores where you can shop on-line should allow you to return to the store. This is not always the case. I don't want to pay to try on clothes. (Paying to return items does not make sense to me.)
  3. I have a problem paying high prices for clothes that will not last. It's a waste.
  4. Pregnancy isn't the only thing you have to buy for! You need to think about clothes for nursing too (if you make that choice.)
So, when I could no longer fit into my pants, I went to Thyme Maternity as it was the closer store. To go to Motherhood was double the time and more traffic.

My experience? It was hit and miss. One visit, helpful and friendly. The next, the complete opposite.

Early on, I bought: a pair of jeans, some leggings, two nursing bras, a top, a maxi dress, and a jean jacket, and a rain coat. I also got the Marcelle stretch cream. I received 2 coupons.

Win: the sporty nursing bras are comfortable.
Win: the top looks great with leggings and could be worn after birth.
Win: the maxi dress and jean jacket are the same, I can wear them pregnant and not.
Win: I got coupons.

Then it all went downhill.

Coupons
The coupons were only for their fancier clothing. I hadn't bought anything that it would apply to and I wasn't going to. The coupons were limited and useless.

Rain Coat
One spring day, I was out at a park. It started to rain. No problem, I was wearing my rain coat! Wrong. It took 3 minutes for the rain to seep through the coat. By the time I got to my car, I was soaked. Completely soaked. Their jacket was regular $115. I got my waterproof Salomon coat at $99. I have never been soaked, I've never been wet! Why do I have to pay more because it's maternity? And why do they charge so much for something so poor?

I contacted Thyme about their poor product and I got this:

"We value the time you have taken to inform us of your comments and suggestions regarding our merchandise as well as our coupons. Rest assured that we have forwarded your e-mail to the appropriate department to review your concerns.

Comments from our customers such as yourself are the key to improving business, and we appreciate them tremendously.

Thank you and we hope to serve you again soon."

Then I got another e-mail saying that my case was closed. That was it! Nothing to try and make it right.

Stretch Mark Cream
After a week of use, I had zits all over my stomach. When I contacted Thyme, they told me because it was opened, it was nonreturnable. Even stores like Shoppers will allow you to return a product if it causes that type of reaction. They offered nothing. They made no attempt to make it right.

Pants

The jeans and leggings were ok for the first couple months. Then, they started wanting to come down. The dryer didn't help. (Note: After birth, still unable to wear my normal pants, these want to keep falling down and roll over.) This was annoying but nothing compared to my biggest disappointment.
I sat down on the couch and R-IIIIIIII-PPPPPPP! My jeans split open. They ripped right across the back of my leg like shorts...very short shorts.

Two days later, wearing my leggings, I sit down...

Yup...R-IIIIIIII-PPPPPPP! These ripped right on the seam.

I had the pants for about 6 months. When I called Thyme, they said there was nothing they could do. When I asked to speak to a manager, they said no one was available.

I know things wear, I know they don't last forever. For me, my frustration lies more in their unwillingness to make it right.

I have jeans in my closet (unable to wear them) that I have had for years! Why are these maternity jeans made so poorly!? Why won't they stand behind their products? Why do they charge so much for things that are so poorly constructed?

Because we'll pay. We have to.

I know this is a big rant on Thyme Maternity. Honestly, the products I got from Motherhood (other than the nursing tanks), weren't much better. Other company's return policies made it too hard/costly for me to try. And the things I tried from Amazon were sized all over the place. At least I didn't have to pay to return.

As a whole I am disappointed. I am frustrated. I am broke. Ok, not really, but with all that money spent and wasted, I could have bought things like diapers! I needed that money!

Suggestions:
  • Buy clothes that you can wear while pregnant and ones that you can wear after too. Longer tunics with leggings are comfortable and stylish. Also, maxi dresses are great in the heat and trendy too.
  • Be aware of styles that you can wear for nursing too. Wrap tops that cross in the front allow you to pull down one side for easy nursing. They can also help hide unwanted rolls ;). Pulling down a top is much easier than having to roll one up (and keep it there!)
  • Try the rubberband trick. If your pants still fit, just not in the waist, tie the band to your button hole and loop over your button. Not good enough? Try a belly band.
  • Some tanks are slack enough you can just pull them down. Or, go to Pinterest for DIY Nursing Tank Ideas! Unfortunately I looked to late. Summer was over and the spaghetti strapped tanks were gone.
  • Be comfortable! And invest in some good shoes! I bought new shoes, but I made sure that they were styles that I could wear during and after, even if my feet did grow a bit (possible!)
That's it! Sorry this post is more negative, I promise this is a rare post!

Remember: Let's get #bringqualityback trending. Let's make ripples. Let's ask for more!

Until next time,

Chapter 5 ~ The Rare Symptoms...

When you are pregnant, there are some symptoms that are more common than others:
  • Morning Sickness (or night for some)
  • Heartburn
  • Food Cravings
  • Mood Swings
  • Swelling
  • Sleeplessness
  • Need to Avoid Certain Foods (due to gas, etc.)
  • Pregnancy Brain (despite what tests may say, this is real!)
These are just to name a few.

I didn't have nausea or cravings. I didn't really have mood swings, or sleeplessness. I had a bit of swelling and one bad bout of heartburn. But other than that, I had symptoms that I had never heard of: Congestion & Foot Tenderness.

I discovered I was pregnant before I hit 1 month. The congestion started right around then. When I told my Mom, she didn't think it could be related to my pregnancy, she had never heard of it. When I asked my Doctor, they had never heard of it either.

So, I went to Google. Turns out, I wasn't the only one! I won't get into why it happens. Frankly, that didn't matter to me. I just wanted to know how to stop it or decrease it. I am not a Doctor but this is what I found worked for me.

CONGESTION:
I was congested 24/4! During the day, my breathing was different than before. It was normal but I felt like I had less space to breathe through. The night was where I had the most trouble. I breathe through my nose, so congestion was really difficult for me. When I implemented these two things, I slept much better.

What I Did:
  • To help me sleep, and to help me get deeper breaths, I slept on my back propped up by many pillows.
  • I also bought an oil diffuser. This was extremely helpful! I would add a mix of essential oils to help with sleep and easier breathing.
Together these two things helped me get through the night. I would still be congested during the day, but breathing was normalish/manageable.

Details:
  • The Diffuser: VicTsing Oil Diffuser (amazon.ca)
  • Oils: Now Essential Oils (your local health food store or amazon.ca)
    • I would mix the oils depending on what I wanted to smell. I always used 10-15 drops total. Oils I used included: lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil, chamomile, and eucalyptus.
FOOT TENDERNESS:
This started around the end of my 7th month.

I hate to say this, but this was very painful! It wasn't my feet swelling, it was extreme pain on the bottoms of my feet. I walked and my feet ached with each step. Thankfully, it would only last about thirty minutes or so before it stopped. In total, it only went on for a few weeks and for a few days at a time. And contrary to what you would think, I found that being on my feet helped. The days I was on my feet more, I was fine.

What I Did:
  • At night, I would massage Tiger Balm on the bottoms of my feet right before bed. This seemed to help a lot.
  • In those weeks, I slept on my feet propped up above my heart. Together with sleeping propped up, it took a bit to get set-up for bed and I must have looked ridiculous! It didn't help every time but I think that's more because my feet didn't always stay elevated. I was fine sleeping propped up on my back but I found it harder keeping my feet up.
  • My midwife recommended compression socks. I was pregnant over the summer, so my plan was to wear them at night. I was unable to find them at a local drug store in my size. By the time I looked online, the pain stopped.
    • I recently learned that there is compression hosiery which would have been extremely helpful in the summer months! Comment if you try either and they work, I'd like to know!
  • Not related, but I found regular pedicures (in a well ventilated spa) was great while I was pregnant. There was no way I could reach to paint my toes and I got a foot massage. Win-win.
Like I said, I am not a professional, but it seemed to work for me. I hope it helps you too!

Details:

When I was looking into these two rare pregnancy symptoms, I didn't really find anything helpful to walk me through these rare pregnancy symptoms. I hope that my experiences can and will help you in yours.

You may look silly with all your pillows, but at least you'll be able to breathe and walk!

Until next time,

Chapter 4 ~ Canadian Country Mama's Tips & Tricks

I shared with you last week advice that my friends gave me when I was first pregnant. This is my list. Some are related to pregnancy, others are things I found helpful as I was getting ready to welcome our little one.

To preface, I have not been paid or asked to promote any of the following products or events. These are my true opinions.

Pregnancy App:
This being our first child, I wanted to learn about our baby as they grew. I wanted an app that would teach me about how the baby was developing at each stage. I tried a few, but I wasn't impressed. Then, I found Sprout. The Sprout Pregnancy+ App had everything I was looking for and more.

Here's some of my favourite features:

  • My Baby Weekly Updates
    • Approximate weight and length. Compares your baby's size to fruits and vegetables.
    • Highlights different developments in your baby (fingernails, hair, eyes perceiving light, etc.)
  • Weekly "The Doc Says"
    • This highlights different keys at the stage you are at. Example: explaining why you feel tired and how to help combat it.
    • It also provides a timeline though it is not accurate for Canada.
  • My Journal
    • Ability to journal during your whole pregnancy. It also gives ideas of things to journal about if you're lost for ideas.
    • Keeps journal entries organized by date, also marks which week in your pregnancy.
    • Journal allows you to add a picture to each entry.
    • Journal can be exported as a pdf. 1 entry/page.
    • Cons: You are limited by characters. It does not allow for long entries. Though it is longer than a tweet.
  • Organizer
    • M.D. Visit Planner
      • Mark your next appointment.
      • Keep track of useful details (due date, weight update.)
      • Write down questions and their answers.
    • To Do
      • Create and manage tasks (I didn't use this one.)
    • Newborn Essentials
      • Their list of what they felt was needed for baby and how many.
      • I used this as a reference.
    • Hospital Bag
      • Same as above. I used it as a reference only. Hospital Bag post will be coming soon!
  • Tools
    • Weight Tracker
      • Easily record your weight gain.
      • Helpful if use you want to compare weight gain against your next pregnancy.
      • Can be changed to lbs instead of kgs.
    • Kick Counter
      • Track frequency of your baby's movement. I didn't use this feature.
    • Contraction Counter
      • This was very helpful. We used it right from the beginning of the first contraction to when we met up with our midwife at the hospital.
      • It helped my husband easily keep track of contractions as he needed to be able to call the midwife and let her know where we were at. In that moment you don't want a stopwatch (even on your phone) and a pen and paper. This app does it all for you! All you do is press start and stop.

This app can be purchased on it's own, or you can buy the bundle (Tracker, Pregnancy, Baby.) Personally, for all these apps do, I thought the bundle was well worth it. I highly recommend these apps!

Baby Show
I forgot about the timing of the Toronto Baby Show last year. My husband was unavailable, so my Dad came with me. It was a nice time to spend with my Father and as a grandparent, his ticket was cheaper than mine!

The Baby Show was great for 3 reasons:

  1. Draws
    • Make labels with your name, address, e-mail, and phone #. Because I forgot about these, I didn't have time to make labels, but they would have been very helpful!
    • Draws for everything baby. And why not? If you have a chance of saving yourself some money and getting something free, do it!
  2. Information
    • Thankfully, we were given a car seat and stroller by an amazing friend who no longer needed it. But if you need a car seat or a stroller then likely you want to look at them, ask questions, and compare. At the Baby Show, you can do all of this. There were so many car seat and stroller options! If you need or want more information on baby items, this is a good place to be.
    • Plus, they had a car seat installation clinic. Because of insurance reasons, these are getting harder to find. But if you have your car seat, you can get it checked out at the Baby Show!
  3. Shopping
    • While I was there, I picked up a few toys.
    • I also got a subscription to Today's Parent Magazine. I love this magazine! It hits being a parent at all ages and stages. Plus, it's Canadian! As a show bonus, I got a baby onesie and a scarf for myself.

Here's a list of Baby Shows in Ontario this Year:

April 1-2, 2017The Baby Show (Toronto)

April 28-30, 2017 ~ BabyTime Show (Toronto)

May 27-28, 2017 ~ Bump Baby Toddler Expo (Hamilton)

September 30 & October 1, 2017 ~ The Baby Show (Toronto)

October 1-2, 2017 ~ Baby Expo (London)

November 4-5, 2017The Baby Show (Ottawa)

Prenatal Yoga
Before pregnancy, my activities included Zumba, biking, hiking, and kayaking. Being pregnant, I wasn't able to ride my bike or go kayaking. So, I needed a different activity. Plus, I wanted something where I could connect with other women that were in the same boat. So, I found a local prenatal yoga class. Best decision!

Yoga helped me relax, it helped me stay active and limber, and it gave me an hour of quiet away from work and home. It also equipped me with some positions to use when I felt uncomfortable or had certain pains flare up; easy positions that I could do at home or work.

Search Google or ask your Midwife or Doctor if they know of a local class. And they may even have a Mom & Baby Yoga that you can do after your baby is born.

Nursery Set-Up Recommendations:
These are some tips that I have found invaluable in our Nursery set-up.
  • Keep Laundry Bin by Change Table
    • With the exception of a couple big spit-ups, we change our daughter at the change table. Keeping the bin close by has been very helpful.
  • Nursing Basket
    • I will expand on this in a later post, but this basket is crucial. I had two main spots that I nursed: the nursery and the living room. So, I made sure there was a basket at each. You get hungry and thirsty when you breastfeed. The basket helped keep everything I needed close at hand!
  • Clothes
    • I pre-washed and sorted all of the clothes that we received in advance. I kept the first two sizes close at hand, not knowing what our starting size would be. The rest were stored in bins. Each bin contained a new size and stacked neatly in the closet.
Facebook Buy&Sell
There are community Buy&Sell pages all over Facebook. Think of it as kijiji in your own area. People sell all sorts of stuff and it can be a great place to look for baby stuff at a much cheaper price. I found a Baby Bouncer Seat for $30 less than what it would be new and it was like new. Threw it all in the wash and no one would have known. I also have a friend who found an excellent deal on a great high chair. Others have found bundles of clothes at good prices.

Search Facebook to find one (or more) in your area and see what kind of deals you can find!

Diaper Bag
Like my quilt and wall hanging I mentioned in Chapter 1, my Mom (https://upstairshobbyroom.blogspot.ca) made me an amazing diaper bag. It is the perfect size. However, there are some times we need a bigger bag (going to the hospital, Christmas....)

The New Day Tote from Thirty-One is a perfect diaper bag! It has plenty of pockets (two outside and two inside for bottles, a zipper pocket inside and outside, and two more pockets inside the bag), sturdy straps, and the whole bag is wipeable and washable. Need a Thirty-One consultant? Send me a message and I'll connect you with one.
Food
I love to cook but I knew that I would be very busy the first few weeks after the baby was born. I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to cook. And, my husband doesn't cook. He will turn on the stove or microwave, but no cooking. So, in my 7th month, I started to prepare.

Whenever I made a meal that could freeze, I made two. We ate one, and I froze the other. The week before I was due, I went to Costco and I stocked up! I got individual meals, high protein snacks, and granola bars. I wanted meals for myself and my husband, I also wanted quick things that I could grab when I was hungry but didn't have time (or energy) to make anything.

I found individual chicken pot pies, Babybel cheese, fig bars, and Summer Fresh Salads all great things to grab in a pinch.

Hope you find these notes useful!

Chapter 3 ~ Friendly Advice

Before I found out I was pregnant, I had multiple friends who had babies. I saw their things and had shopped for them, so, I was familiar with some of current trends and gadgets. Until you consider these things for your own child...you have no idea how crazy this world is! You could spend a fortune on baby stuff! And some of it is pretty neat.

Not wanting to waste time or money, I asked my friends what they recommended. What did they find worked, what they didn't. What would they not want to raise a baby without (any guesses?) After I had their lists, I did my own research. They had given me the ideas, but I had to find what brand and models would work for us.

This blog is dedicated to my amazing friends who shared their thoughts and their finds with me. Below are pieces of advice that I have found to be invaluable over these last few months, including one thing I had never heard of.

Take these ideas and then do your own research! Find what works for you and to find the best price. Save your pennies where you can. I say pennies, because online they still exist! Lol.

  • Prenatal Vitamins
    • If you have a Costco membership, buy your prenatal vitamins there! Materna vitamins are way cheaper there. And, they have a very large Kirkland bottle option even cheaper.
  • Invest in a good stroller.
    • I live in the country, so that goes without saying. But great strollers can be expensive. If you have your eye on one specific, check out Kijiji. You never know what you may find!
    • We decided on an UppaBaby Vista stroller. Large, thick wheels were what I noticed first. It comes with a bassinet (which we have used for three months now), and a toddler seat. Bonus, with this stroller, you can buy an additional toddler seat to have two toddlers riding along. You can also get a board for a toddler to stand on allowing for three passengers. In newer models, you can get two bassinets at a time on one stroller! Great for twins :). And a variety of colours are also available.

  • Get a Diaper Genie
    • This was always part of my plan but it was the one thing a friend said they would not do without. When my husband and I went to pick it up, he wondered if we really needed it. After all, they're not cheap. But now, he's glad we did! No diaper smell in our nursery :).
    • The "Elite" model has a flat back, so it fits up against the wall perfectly.
  • Invest in a Baby Tub
    • Choose whichever works best for you and your space, but get one. For the amount of times you will bathe your baby, it's worth it.
    • We choose the Fisher Price Calming Waters Vibration Baby Tub. At the time, Amazon.ca had the best price.
      • This tub comes with an infant sling and a divider to help prevent toddlers from slipping. It has a drain in the bottom and it vibrates to soothe your baby.
  • The Diaper Debate
    • I have friends that do cloth - all the power to them!
    • But we choose to go with disposable. So, the question was which ones?
      • I had heard that the "no name" brands tabs aren't as good, so they were out. Other "better" brands were to costly to consider.
      • The battle became Pampers vs Huggies.
        • The friends I asked unanimously voted HUGGIES. They said they were more absorbent and had better leak control. So, we went with Huggies.
        • I have to say, I agree! Plus, Pampers seems to have a big size discrepancy. As you can see in the pic below the first diaper is a Pampers size newborn. to it's right, is the next stage, size 1. Then you'll see beside it is a Huggies size newborn and to it's right, is the next stage, size 1.

        • When my daughter was born, she fit the Pampers newborns for a few weeks, At three months, she still couldn't fit the Pampers size 1s properly. The Huggies have fit perfectly all the way through.
        • When I signed up, Huggies also sent me great me a free bag of diapers and great coupons! Sign yourself up here: No Baby Unhugged
        • I am currently waiting for my trials from The Honest Company. Just pay the shipping. Pretty good deal, even if it is American dollars. I also bundled some other products to try that I couldn't find here in Canada. I will review these Honest products in another post.
          • Diaper Bundle: 7 diapers & 10 wipes
          • Essentials: Trial sizes of 5 personal care and home cleaning essentials: Shampoo+Body Wash, Face+Body Lotion, Multi-Surface Cleaner, Healing Balm, Hand Soap.
  • Find a good, supportive baby carrier.
    • We wanted something that both myself and my husband would feel comfortable using. That meant looking for a carrier, not a sling. Also, to make it worth the money, we wanted something with versatility for carrying with good support.
    • My Choice? The Onya Outback I love this carrier!
      • You can have your baby on your front (facing you or facing out), you can have them on your side or on your back. You can even breastfeed in it, though I haven't tried that yet.
      • It can also be done up two ways: with straight straps or crossed. The straps are thick with great padding.
      • It also comes with a sun canopy and pockets.
      • And when your baby is big enough to sit on their own, it converts into a seat that can be strapped to a chair. Yes, it is amazing!
      • Add-ons: an infant insert available as well as teething straps.
  • Bottle Recommendation
    • I had planned to breastfeed exclusively but even with a strict pumping regime, I don't produce enough. So, I had to find a bottle that would be a good fit to work with breastfeeding.
    • My friends recommended NUK. We got the "Perfect Fit" slow release nipples and they work great! I have heard of babies that have troubles taking a bottle or are picky about the nipple. Our daughter gave us no problems.
    • NUK's bottles are shaped specifically replicate the nipple. It also introduces a anti-colic system. No complaints here!
    • They are available in 5oz and 10oz NUK Canada Bottles & Accessories
    • Con: They no longer make them with sealing disks. Their indented caps are meant to seal off the nipple. However, I find when I shake to mix formula, they leak a bit. Also, the lids can come off easily in your bag. Working on finding more, will update if I find any! For now, I took one as a stencil and cut out some flexible cutting boards to make some.

  • A Gift: NeilMed Naspira Aspirator
    • This was a gift from a friend that is a nurse. And I am thankful for it! I had never heard of one like this but there are so many pros to this product!
    • You can use it as a bulb, pumping it with your hand. Or, you can use the tube and suck out the congestion. Our daughter doesn't like it but it is much more effective than other bulbs.
    • The main thing I love about this aspirator is that it's clear. This helps you see the progress you've made. It also ensures that when you clean it, you see everything. And it can be disassembled for easy cleaning. Included: a mesh carrying case and extra filters.
    • Check it out at Amazon: NeilMed Naspira Aspirator

I hope you find these tools to be as helpful as I have! Is there something that you found you couldn't live without while raising your newborn? Please share in the comments below!

Chapter 2 ~ Call the Midwife!

If you're on Netflix, or like British TV, then you've probably heard of or seen BBC's "Call the Midwife." I really enjoyed it. I didn't really know a whole lot about midwifery before the show. And honestly, after seeing three seasons, I didn't know any more. Not really. I mean the show is based in a different time, a different country...and as good as it is, it's still just a TV show.

I didn't know anything about Midwives here in Canada in the 21st Century, until a friend of mine got a Midwife for her pregnancy. She had a great experience, and highly recommended it. So, when I found out I was pregnant, I decided to look into it.

This is what I learned:

  • Getting a midwife is FREE!
    • Yes, you read that right! My Doctor didn't really say anything about it. They mentioned that it was a possibility, but it was kind of just a passing comment. If it weren't for my friend letting me know this little fact, I would have thought it was a special service like a 3D ultrasound.
    • You have a choice. After seeing your Family Doctor for you first 20 weeks, you can switch to an OBGYN or a Midwife.
  • Midwives work within a certain geological area.
    • So, make sure you find one that serves your home address.
  • You need to book early!
    • They only take on so many clients based on your due date. If getting a midwife is something you're considering or interested in, call them right away.
  • It's personal.
    • My midwife knew me by name. Doctors and OBGYNS, as good as they can be, have many clients. Midwives, only taking on so many patients at a time, can be more personal. I think our Midwife was extra special. She was so good and remembered many details about me and my pregnancy without looking at a file.
    • Midwives are also always on call. As a result, I had my main midwife and a back-up. If I called, or had an emergency, and my main Midwife wasn't available, I got the back-up. But it was someone I had met, not just someone on call.
  • With a Midwife, you have options.
    • You can give birth in a hospital, at home, in water...some even have small personal clinics near the hospital.
    • They also explain things in detail. Both sides. They don't make assumptions. They'll share pros and cons, studies, and then let you make the decision. I didn't feel any pressure or judgment.
  • They have resources.
    • At my Doctor's office, I got some print outs in a folder. The Midwives gave me an organized binder full of useful information sorted by tabs.
    • I am sure that it is different at every office. At the one in my area, they had a lending library with books that you could borrow on a variety of topics from pregnancy to raising children. They also had nursing pillows and slings that you could try out to see what would work best for you.
  • They are available 24/7
    • If I had a question, they would get back to me.
    • I got a pager number. If I had an emergency, I could call them and get an answer right away. If it was serious, they would deal with it right then. If needed, they would meet me at the local Hospital.
  • You get a personal coach/supporter
    • My Midwife was there with me through the whole process. In fact, at delivery and afterwards, I had 2 midwives. They encouraged me and my husband (who felt helpless.) They talked me through everything before and as it happened.
    • I didn't need a Doctor, but if something goes wrong, a Doctor is called in. In the midst of your pain, you have a medical professional who knows you and can help you stick to your birthing plan (as much as that is possible.)
  • They will help you with breastfeeding.
    • This will be a whole other post. But most Moms, new and "old" (like someone who has had had six kids...read an example in Today's Parent Magazine), need help. They help ensure your baby is latching properly and getting what they need.
    • They follow up at home after!
      • That's right! So good, it's worth putting in bold. With my other friends, after just having a baby, they had to drag themselves and their two day old baby to the Doctor's office! All those germs and possibly bad weather. With a Midwife, they came right to me. Three home visits within 2 weeks.
      • When our daughter's weight really dropped, she made extra trips to watch her weight and make sure our progress was on track.
    • You stay with them for six weeks after the birth of your baby.
      • After the six weeks is up, you get transferred back to your Family Doctor.
    You can probably guess from the list above that my experience was a good one. Both my husband and I really liked our Midwife and was impressed with the whole set-up. We will go this route again.

    Until next time,

    Chapter 1 ~ Nesting: The Nursery

    For me, nesting began right away. In spite of my constant fatigue, I started reading, I began clearing out what would become the baby's room, and I began researching.

    My goal was to make the best nursery I could. It had become a storage room, so I had a lot of cleaning up to do. As I sorted and organized, I considered several things:

    1. Having a smaller space, we wanted things that served multiple purposes.
    2. We wanted to make it a space that could be easily converted for our future children.
    3. I very carefully weighed out need versus want.
    4. And we wanted it to be fun!

    So, I set out to try and accomplish this.

    Functional
    • Crib (kind of functional and convertible)
    • Storage
      • Our closets are tall, so we added an extra shelf above the existing one to give additional storage.
      • Baby clothes are small (and short!), so we also added an additional cupboard below to store extra and little things.
      • We thought about buying a long, thin storage bin that could fit under the crib. This is still on the list, so far we haven't needed it.
      • We did buy multiple bins to sort and store baby clothes. We keep current clothes in the dresser and additional stages in bins in the closet.
    • Change Table
      • As I mentioned, we have a smaller space, so having a stand alone change table in the nursery was not an option. We updated an old dresser from my Great Grandmother and added a changing pad to the top. Honestly, what would you use a change table for after anyways?
      • Kushies Change Pad
    • Bookshelf
      • A small, short bookshelf also became a home for the night light and baby monitor.
    • Toys
      • We wanted things that could be easily stored. (example: a play mat that would fold up)
      • We wanted toys that would last through multiple stages. Something that plays music now could be used to teach colours and shapes later.
    I was also constantly thinking about what the best layout would be. What do I need by my change table? Where should the rocking chair be? Pinterest became my inspiration! It got me to think, "What will I need and when?" I got a lot of great ideas but ultimately, I simply worked with my own space. So far, everything has been working great! I haven't had to change around anything. Although, we have yet to find space for the giant stuffed dog we received from my brother. And we had to do a bit of rearranging after Christmas to accommodate all the new gifts.

    Convertible

    We were one of those couples wanted to know the gender of our child. If you don't do that, that's fine! To each their own. I'm a planner, so I wanted to know. Plus, as I said, I wanted to make this nursery amazing. To do that, no yellow or green for me.

    We discovered we were going to have a girl (my husband made them double check), so I wanted the nursery to be fun and girly. But I also wanted it to be able to easily covert it later if we have a boy.
    • Walls
      • I choose a light teal colour. My plan was to add pink accents if it was a girl and navy accents if we were having a boy.
      • The last thing we did in the nursery was add our little accents. Pictures, little shelves, and a wall hanging made by my Mom.
    • Accents - Little things to add a pop of colour and girliness
      • Light Cover
      • Sheets
        • I bought plain grey sheets for the bassinet, change pad, and playpen. But I bought two crib sheets with pink in them for fun. It was practical to buy sheets we could use for all future children but had fun by adding a little pink!
        • Kushies Sheets (Made in Canada!)
      • Wall Stickers & Mobile
        •  These were a great deal! At my local Lens Mill Store, I found a pack of wall stickers (elephants - exactly what I wanted!) for $4.99! Beside them I found a mobile in our colour scheme for $9.99. Perfect! Plus, with the mobile, I can easily buy or make different ornaments for a boy to change it up.
      • Closet Dividers
        • Another Etsy purchase. A touch of pink makes them girly but I can easily find clothes in the right sizes. This was not a need, but when I saw them in our room colours, I decided to splurge :).
        • Closet Dividers
          • I purchased all of them at once to save on shipping. Newborn-7!
      • Curtains
        • Our window curtains are grey blackout curtains. They will remain boy or girl. Our closet had no door. As I mentioned, our space is small, so we didn't want a door in the way. I also wanted to see the fun treasures inside. So, we hung a white tension rod across the top with patterned pink curtains.
      • Pillows
        • This wasn't a need, just something I had. We had a bassinet, so we didn't use the crib at first. The pink pillows sat in there along with a stuffed elephant (made by my Mom) to make it fun until it was occupied.
    Need vs. Want

    This is more related to "baby stuff" in general. There are so many gadgets and devices out there. So many things that can make being a Mom easier, at least that's the claim! You could spend a fortune that you (at least we) don't have on baby stuff. But you don't really need it. Diapers, that's a need. A swiveling, swinging, singing (lots of "s" words there - not intentional!) bassinet is not a need. No judgment if you have one.

    So, if you have a small space like we do, weigh each thought carefully as you make your registry, or fill your cart. Remember, everything needs to fit...and your baby will grow...quickly!

    Fun

    I think the pictures will speak for themselves on this one ;).

    My Mom is a quilter. The wall hanging, elephant quilt and elephant in the crib, along with various other items were all made by her. It's all amazing! She's been happily making a lot of things for her first grandchild! If you're reading this and into sewing and/or quilting, check her out: upstairshobbyroom.blogspot.ca)
